Sandringham Hospital’s Special Care Nursery has introduced a new program for Premature or unwell babies to provide a better start to life via the ‘cuddler’ volunteer program.
Sam Jenkins (Special Care Nursery Unit Manager at Sandringham Hospital) explains that when mums and dads can’t always be on-site. the babies are often need the hospital’s support for an extended period of time and that is where the cuddler program comes into play. Ms Jenkins explains that “Cuddling provides social benefits in premature development and social milestones”.
Continuing on Ms Jenkins points out that Cuddling to calm a baby also allows their energy to be used for growing.” New parents in Sandringham Hospitals special care nursery are asked to opt ‘in’ or ‘out’ of the cuddler program, with many choosing to take up the opportunity to briefly attend to their own health issues.
